Italdesign patented the four wheel drive solution which was implemented on the Fiat Panda 4x4 in 1980. FIAT purchased it immediately after the 1980 Turin Motor Show, allowing the production in 1983. Lancia Delta Integrale was based upon the very same patent. Italdesign kept on working on this solution ever since.
